Stained Teeth? How A Laser Teeth Whitening Procedure Helps

If you have stained teeth, you have many options to whiten your teeth. One of these options that works great is a laser tooth whitening procedure. Below is information on what this is and how it works to help you decide if this is the right choice to have whiter teeth.

Laser Teeth Whitening

Laser teeth whitening is generally done by a cosmetic dentist, but your regular dentist may also offer this at their practice. During the procedure, a bleaching gel is placed on your teeth. A laser is then used to make the bleaching gel work much better and faster. This works much better when compared to at-home whitening, such as using whitening strips or special toothpaste.

Check for Receding Gums

The first thing you will do is make an appointment with your dentist to check for receding gums. This is a gum disease that causes your gum tissue to pull away from your teeth. This exposes the roots underneath the gums. If you have receding gums the bleaching may not work well as the whitening may be uneven. This is because the roots of your teeth will not bleach. If you have receding gums the dentist can offer other types of teeth whitening procedures that will work better for you.

Get a Tooth Cleaning

Before the treatment is started, you will need to get your teeth cleaned by a dental hygienist. Having clean teeth is important for the whitening gel to adhere to your tooth well. During the cleaning, the hygienist will make sure you do not have any cavities. If you do, the dentist will need to treat the cavities and do fillings.

Laser Whitening Procedure

During the teeth whitening procedure you have to keep your mouth open. The doctor will use a plastic or rubber guard to ensure you do this. A gel barrier is applied to your gums to protect them from the bleaching gel. This gel hardens and results in a rubber texture.

The bleaching gel is then placed on your teeth and the dentist uses a laser to activate the bleaching gel. When they finish, they need to let the compound remain on your teeth for a few minutes. After this time, the dentist uses a tool to remove any bleaching gel that may still be on your teeth. If your teeth are still stained, the process will be repeated until your teeth are completely white.
